SAMPO KOSKI is a playable four-star character from 2023 gacha game Honkai Star Rail. HSR is a game created and developed by Hoyolab, whose other games include Genshin Impact and Honkai Impact 3rd. HSR's plot revolves around the player character (Caelus or Stelle, depending on gender choice, also renamable) being discovered by the Astral Express Crew and joining their group, the Nameless, on a journey around the universe to find their purpose.

On the second playable world, Jarilo-VI, is where the players meet Sampo Koski, hiding out in a snow bank. Sampo assists the players on their journey around the frozen planet, though some people might interpret his actions from a more suspicious or morally grey light. In Belobog, the last remaining city on Jarilo-VI, Sampo is seen both as a help and a hindrance. In the Overworld, he is seen primarily as a conman and a criminal, having sucessfully scammed and stolen many times. In the Underworld, he's more benevolent, even if he isn't entirely trusted - he brings down food and medical supplies, and plays with the children.

Sampo is hinted at being one of the Masked Fools (by a hidden memory bubble during the Aetherium Wars event), a faction dedicated to the Aeon of Elation, Aha. He's self described as being friendly, and loving to make people laugh. At the end of the Jarilo-VI questline, he appears to be speaking with someone over a monitor, asking if they liked the show, and how Sampo Koski (implied to be a character, himself, of sorts) is better left as a background character. He then references Epsilon, an area of the universe heavily influenced by Aha. After that he directly breaks the fourth wall, addressing the player and asking if they liked his performance.

With the 2.0 Penacony update, Sampo has appeared again! First, by being impersonated by Sparkle (another Masked Fools member), and second, in Black Swan's quest - involving her, Sparkle, and Sampo himself in the flesh! At the very end of this quest (being a murder-mystery put on by Sparkle to try and team up with Black Swan) Sparkle reveals that Sampo only helped her to get his Masked Fool's Mask back! As of 2.1, he has not shown up again, but from a comment by Sparkle, it is likely that Jarilo-VI will be getting another quest in the future with Sampo in the spotlight!

Sparkle: Let me guess: A catastrophe is coming to Jarilo-VI, am I right?

Sampo: Well, no comment about that. But I loved that line you said, "If you're too late to take the stage, you can work behind the scenes" - That really makes sense.

SAMPO FUN FACT: His name, Sampo, comes from the Finnish folklore device used to create infinite riches. It was eventually lost at sea. In addition, did you know that it's mispronounced in game? (help!!!!)

Something extremely funny to me, as a Luka fictive, is that in canon it seems Luka doesn't like Sampo all that much....

Luka's voiceline about Sampo: I don't need a middleman. Plus, anyone who calls themself "tall, blue, and handsome" definitely can't be trusted.

I imagine that Sampo tried to make a deal with Luka, and it didn't go well.... After completing Luka's character quest, you can find him in the back of the Fight Club and talk to him! First meeting you have to leave and come back, because he's surrounded by fans. On the second time you can ask him questions about his championship title and Wildfire and the owner of the Fight Club, Scott. It's implied that Luka doesn't fight specifically because he likes fighting, but because he wants to set a good example for people.

While he does also appear to be very competetive (as seen in the Aetherium Wars event), he also seems to regard his time at the Fight Club as something like additional training. So, Sampo wanting to take something likely pure to Luka, and proposing he entangles it in moneymaking, feels about as gross as what Scott does. That's at least my overthought reason as to why these voicelines exist.... ahaha....

SAMPO FUN FACT: One time he scammed the floral shop lady, Vaska, when she was attempting to buy an audiobook version of Tale of the Winterlands. The scam was some Dirk Strider shit. He re-wrote and re-recorded a different ending where all of the characters died, causing "indelible emotional damage to the victim." Why did he do this. (source: "Anti-Fraud Guide, Edited Version")

SAMPO FUN FACT: The song that plays when Sampo says "I say what I mean, and I mean what I say," as the Trailblazer is passing out (before being brought to the Underworld), is the OST track "Streets Abuzz".
